Running with a bigger bust? Find a Sports Bra that keeps up
Share
Running is hard enough without holding your boobs down as you go.
Yet for plenty of women with bigger busts, that’s part of the routine. Wearing two sports bras. Hanging onto an old favourite because nothing else comes close. Finishing a long run, then discovering exactly where your bra rubbed when you step into the shower.
If that sounds familiar, here’s what to look for in your next running bra—and two styles worth considering.
Still wearing two sports bras to run?
If you’re doubling up to get enough support, it’s worth reassessing the fit and construction of your main sports bra.
A running bra needs a secure band, enough cup coverage to contain your whole bust, and a design that controls movement. Tightening the straps harder won’t make up for cups that are too small or a band that shifts around.
Women with a smaller back and fuller bust can find this particularly frustrating. A crop top might have enough room around the body but leave you spilling out above or at the sides. Going up a size can add room while making the band too loose.
Look for either individual band and cup sizing or a specialist sizing system that takes both your bust and ribcage measurements into account.
Why does your sports bra chafe on longer runs?
A bra can feel comfortable when you put it on, then rub once you’ve been running for an hour.
Sweat, repeated movement and friction can all contribute. A moving band, an edge or seam pressing against your skin, or breast tissue rubbing where it isn’t properly contained may be part of the problem.
Anti-chafe balm can help, but if you’re applying it before every run and still getting sore in the same place, take another look at your bra.
Check whether:
- The band stays level and secure when you move.
- Your whole bust sits inside the cups.
- The underwire, if there is one, sits around your breast tissue.
- The fabric, seams or fastening rub at the sore spot.
- The band or elastic has stretched with wear.
No sports bra can promise a chafe-free run for everyone. Finding the right fit is a useful place to start.
ENELL SPORT: firm, wirefree support
Prefer a secure, held-in feel? The ENELL SPORT uses full coverage and firm compression to hold your bust close to your body and help reduce bounce.
Wide straps spread the load across your shoulders, while the substantial back and underband help stabilise the bra during movement.
It also fastens at the front, so there’s no pulling a sweaty sports bra over your head after your run.
Consider ENELL SPORT if you want:
- High-impact support without underwire.
- Full coverage and firm compression.
- A front hook-and-eye fastening.
- Wide straps rather than narrow, adjustable ones.
ENELL has its own sizing system, and the straps and band aren’t adjustable. Check both your bust and ribcage measurements against its size chart. If they fall into different sizes, ask us for help before ordering.
Freya High-Octane: support with lift and separation
If you prefer each breast to have its own space, the Freya High-Octane offers underwired support with separately shaped, moulded cups.
Its breathable cups, padded straps and cushioned wire casing are designed with comfort in mind. An optional J-hook lets you convert the straps into a racerback.
Individual band and cup sizing also gives you more scope to find a combination that suits a smaller back and fuller bust.
Consider Freya High-Octane if you want:
- High-impact support with underwire.
- Lift and separation.
- Moulded cups and a structured fit.
- Padded straps with a racerback option.
The racerback setting should feel secure without pulling painfully on your shoulders or under your arms. Try both strap positions to see which suits you.
Is your old running bra ready to retire?
When you finally find a bra you love, it’s tempting to keep wearing it indefinitely.
But if you’re tightening the straps more, using the tightest hooks or noticing more bounce than before, check for stretched elastic, damaged fabric and changes in your fit.
Your replacement may need to be a different size or style from the one that worked years ago.
